What a blocked drain usually costs
Most standard blockages clear for between $150 and $400. If tree roots are involved, or the plumber needs a CCTV camera to find the problem, expect $350 to $900 for the camera inspection and jet blasting together. A collapsed or root-broken pipe that needs relining is a bigger job, usually $3,000 and up. The full cost guide breaks down every scenario.
Why Lake Macquarie drains block
Lake Macquarie is hard on drains, and the reason is the age of the housing. Houses of the pre-1970s era across the eastern ridge, the Cardiff corridor and the old lakeside and mining villages were sewered with earthenware and vitrified clay pipe, laid in short lengths with a mortared joint every metre or so. Decades of ground movement open those joints, and the mature street trees that make these suburbs worth living in send fine roots straight into them.
Down on the low-lying lakefront the story changes. Streets around Marks Point, Belmont South, Blacksmiths and parts of Swansea sit barely above lake level, so stormwater that cannot get away and groundwater seeping into tired old lines do the damage instead. At the other end of the scale, a newer estate like Cameron Park has modern pipe and far fewer root problems, which is worth knowing before anyone quotes you for a camera.
Your pipes and Hunter Water's pipes
Hunter Water owns and maintains the sewer mains under Lake Macquarie's streets and easements. As the property owner you are responsible for the sewer pipes and fittings on your property, right up to where they connect to Hunter Water's system, and that includes the boundary trap and the inspection shaft. If your inspection shaft is full or overflowing, that can point to a blockage in Hunter Water's main or branch line rather than your own pipes, and Hunter Water asks to be called straight away. A camera inspection with a locator shows which side of the connection the fault sits on, which can save you the whole bill.
A licensed drain plumber clears the blockage, then tells you honestly whether it was a one-off or whether the pipe itself needs attention.
